About This Video

Peter Santanello begins this journey in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he explores the town’s close relationship with the U.S. military and aerospace research. He visits the New Mexico Museum of Space History and travels through the surrounding desert landscape shaped by Holloman Air Force Base, White Sands Missile Range, and nearby historical test sites tied to the Manhattan Project. From there, he ventures into White Sands National Park, capturing the scale and isolation of the massive gypsum dunes and reflecting on how the desert defines life in southern New Mexico.

The video then shifts west to Lordsburg, a remote railroad town near the Arizona border. Santanello walks the nearly empty downtown, visits the train station, and speaks with longtime residents, business owners, and local leaders about the town’s decline following the loss of railroad traffic and mining jobs. Despite visible abandonment, he uncovers signs of resilience, including a small museum, locally owned shops, community art spaces, and residents who remain deeply committed to preserving the town’s identity and history.

In the final stretch, Santanello travels north toward Silver City, stopping at major historical and industrial sites along the way. He explores the massive Santa Rita Copper Mine, one of the oldest and largest open-pit copper mines in North America, and visits Fort Bayard, a former military post, tuberculosis hospital, and prisoner-of-war camp. The journey concludes in Silver City, a historic mining town with a mix of restored buildings, artistic culture, and lingering frontier character. The video as a whole presents a layered portrait of New Mexico’s most isolated towns, shaped by cycles of boom, decline, and quiet perseverance.
