About This Video

In this episode, Mike Okay travels to Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, beginning in the regional capital Nukus, before boarding a local bus north to the former port town of Muynak. Once a thriving Silk Road–era fishing hub, Muynak now sits deep in the desert after the disappearance of the Aral Sea, formerly the world’s fourth-largest lake. Mike explores the Muynak ship graveyard, where massive rusting vessels remain stranded in the sand, and visits the town center, including the bus station, small local shops, and one of the few remaining restaurants. Through conversations with locals, he documents how the Soviet-era diversion of rivers for cotton farming destroyed the fishing industry, eliminated jobs, and collapsed the town’s economy and identity.

As evening falls, Mike returns to the ship graveyard and sets up camp inside a derelict fishing vessel, spending the night sheltered from the wind amid broken glass and freezing desert temperatures. After dark, he ventures between the abandoned ships, reflecting on the long-term environmental and health consequences of the Aral Sea disaster, including toxic dust storms and elevated cancer rates. The next morning, he wakes inside the boat and offers a broader historical reflection on how Karakalpakstan’s sacrifice fueled Uzbekistan’s cotton economy at immense local cost. The journey concludes with Mike catching the bus back to Nukus, leaving Muynak as a stark example of environmental collapse and the human stories left behind.
