About This Video

In this episode, Seal On Tour travels into the hill tribe region of northern Laos to stay with the Akha people, a Tibetan-descended community whose traditions are closely tied to homemade rice whiskey, known locally as lao. Before entering the village, he visits a local distillery with his guide Da to investigate how the whiskey is made, especially because of recent methanol poisoning deaths involving locally distilled alcohol in Laos. After tasting the extremely strong spirit, watching the rice fermentation and distillation process, and questioning how safe it is, Seal heads deeper into the mountains by motorbike with Da and Jacob. Along the way, they buy cigarettes and snacks as gifts, stop in Hmong and Lue villages, join a morning drinking session during a local celebration, eat grilled pork, and learn how quickly glasses are refilled once the drinking begins.

The journey continues through remote dirt roads, river crossings, and jungle areas before they reach the Akha village where they stay in the chief’s home. Seal explores the village, observing traditional clothing being handmade, livestock roaming freely, spiritual gates, young men’s separate huts, and the strong role of spirits in everyday life. He asks elders about older beliefs surrounding twins, learns how those customs have changed, and later visits a shaman who uses lao in healing rituals. The video grows darker and more ritual-focused as the shaman prepares animal sacrifices, reads patterns from thrown seeds, and serves whiskey infused with roots, snakes, turtles, and other animals. After a final meal involving freshly killed duck, whiskey, and village hospitality, Seal visits the local schoolhouse, gives a playful speech to the children, says goodbye to Da, and rides out of the mountains toward civilization. The episode presents the Akha villages as remote, spiritual, welcoming, and deeply traditional, with rice whiskey serving as the thread connecting hospitality, healing, ritual, food, and daily life.
