About This Video
In this episode, Harry Jagard travels from Jerusalem to Bethlehem by bicycle, using the short but complicated route to explore the religious, political, and human reality of Israel and Palestine on the ground. He begins in Jerusalem, describing the city’s importance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, then walks through the Old City with his friend Vishnu. Along the way, he eats manakish, talks with a Canadian-Israeli man who moved to Israel and served in the army, visits the Western Wall, and eventually reaches Al-Aqsa Mosque through the non-Muslim entrance. He reflects on how strange and intense it feels to have three major religious sites so close together, especially in a city where sacred history, security, tourism, and conflict are constantly overlapping.
After visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and reflecting on his own complicated relationship with religion, Harry rents a bike and attempts to ride south toward Bethlehem. The journey quickly becomes harder than expected as he deals with Jerusalem’s steep hills, confusing checkpoints, the separation wall, and a route that forces him to detour. Just after talking about resilience, he gets a flat tire and is rescued by two Jewish men who stop to help, fix the tire, and refuse payment. As darkness approaches, he finally enters Palestinian territory and is surprised by how developed, welcoming, and lively Bethlehem feels compared to what he had imagined. The video ends with him reaching a hotel in Bethlehem, exhausted but grateful, reflecting that ordinary people on both sides showed him kindness and that the collapse of tourism has deeply hurt local Palestinian businesses that depend on pilgrims and visitors.
