About This Video

Sabbatical travels across Romania after entering from Moldova, beginning his journey in Iași, a historic city often described as the cultural capital of the country and once the capital of the medieval principality of Moldavia. Known for its churches and long academic tradition, Iași serves as a quieter introduction to Romania before he boards a long train westward into Transylvania. He arrives in Brașov, a picturesque medieval city surrounded by mountains, where preserved fortress walls and old town streets highlight the region’s Saxon and Central European heritage.

Continuing deeper into Transylvania, Sabbatical visits Sibiu, a city originally founded by German Saxons and historically known as Hermannstadt. Compared to more heavily trafficked destinations, Sibiu feels calmer and less commercial, offering a glimpse into everyday life alongside well-preserved architecture. From there, the journey passes through Hunedoara, once a major industrial center during the communist era. The landscape shifts noticeably, with aging factories and stark infrastructure reflecting the economic changes Romania has faced since the fall of communism.

The trip concludes in Timișoara, a city known as the birthplace of the Romanian Revolution of December 1989. Along the way, Sabbatical highlights the Carpathian Mountains, which cut through the heart of the country and stand out as one of Romania’s most striking natural features. He also visits Bran Castle, commonly marketed as “Dracula’s Castle,” but cautions viewers that it has little historical connection to Vlad Țepeș and functions largely as a tourist attraction. Overall, the video focuses on lesser-seen regions of Romania, blending history, post-communist realities, and dramatic landscapes into a grounded portrait of the country beyond its stereotypes.
