About This Video
In this Sabbatical video, the journey begins at the Hungary–Ukraine border, where the creator navigates confusing entry requirements before finally crossing into western Ukraine. He first arrives in the Carpathian region, the country’s safest and most mountainous area, and stays in the town of Mukachevo, exploring the historic Palanok (Mukachevo) Castle overlooking the city. This region, shaped by Hungarian and Central European history, feels calm and largely untouched by direct fighting, though memorials to fallen soldiers serve as constant reminders of the war. Traveling by train through the Carpathian Mountains, he highlights the rural beauty and sparsely populated rail cars before reaching his first major city: Lviv, often considered the cultural heart of western Ukraine.
In Lviv, he explores the historic city center, Rynok Square, the opera house, local flower markets, and a busy book fair, emphasizing how daily life continues despite air raid sirens. The mood shifts dramatically when Russia launches the largest drone and missile attack on Lviv of the war, striking industrial zones and residential neighborhoods overnight. He documents the aftermath alongside police and residents—burned warehouses, shattered storefronts, damaged homes, and civilian casualties, including an entire family killed while the father fought on the front lines. Despite the trauma, public transport resumes and the city presses on. The video concludes with him reaffirming his resolve to continue deeper into the country, boarding a train east toward Kyiv, determined to reach the heart of Ukraine and bear witness to life under war.
